Widmers--Camp Forget & Sleepy Hollow--Ruth Sanford
This picture was taken Aug. 1, 1911 at Camp Forget and Butcher's Spring, a mile east of Ontario, WI on the Kickapoo River Banks. The front of the photo says Sleepy Hollow, so I don't know. Ruth is standing on the right, next to her mother, Mary Bell. Geneva is standing in front of Mary Bell, hands on post, with Hazel seated on her right, and Winnie is seated on the far right. I have the other names if anyone is interested. ---Mary

All those people and just two tents? Now that's what I call roughing it! Must have been cozy.

Those poor women camping in those long, heavy dresses! Lots of buttons, lots of layers -- what a mess!
Grandma (Mary Ann) gave me a book called "Growing Up Along the Kickapoo" by Cloie Neprud which was given to her by Geneva. Geneva wrote inside the book, "To Mary Ann, from Geneva, 3-7-94. Please give to Sarah." The author was born in the early 1900's. Grandma incerted two letters written to her by Geneva describing her own memories of growing up along the Kickapoo River. If anyone is interested in reading Geneva's letters, let me know. --Sarah
Sarah, I'd love to read them and make copies for our boys. Thanks.--Mary
It's hard to imagine that they were really camping because of all of the clothing. Did the guys hunt, or what in the world did they do? Mary - who are the guys lounging together on the left. One especially that has the high forehead... Uncle Dick sort of resembles him. Very interesting photos. Wish we had more details. Geneva no doubt would have some stories about it. ~Nancy~
Nancy, the back of the picture says, "men from front", Ben Brokaw, Bernard Brokaw, Hallie Butcher, John Lawton. So I'm guessing it's Hallie Butcher--I have no idea who he might be. ---Mary
