FAMILY RECIPE
LEMON PIE
(Ruth Sanford)
>Mix together:
1/4 c. sugar
4 rounded Tbsp. flour
>Mix together:
1 3/4 c. water
Juice and grated rind of 2 lemons
>Gradually add dry ingredients to liquid in sauce pan; bring to boil and cook until thick, stirring constantly
>2 egg yolks, beaten (save whites for merengue); add small amount of pie filling to egg yolks and mix well, then add it all back into pie filling
>Cook slowly another 2 minutes, stirring
>Remove from heat and stir in 1 Tbsp. butter; cool; pour into cooled baked pie shell
>Whip egg whites until stiff peaks form, adding in 1/4 c. sugar and 1/2 tsp. cream of tartar while whipping; add to top of pie
>Put in 400-425 oven a few minutes, until nicely browned

Mary Ann was born 3/7/22 - she looks more like two years old here. My copy says 1926 on it, but she doesn't look much over 2 1/2 or so. Probably 1924. ~Nancy~
That's what I was thinking, also. I got the date from the copy of the album Jim gave me. --Mary
It occurred to me that Arnold died the same year this picture was taken - 1924. What a treasure to have captured this moment.

This is definitely one of my favorite pictures. Arnold was the one who started in Rockton, WI and brought the millstones over from "the homeland." I have several pictures of those, but not on digital, and I do not have a scanner. I think about this picture when I look at the photos of my daughters with their Great-Grandmother, Mary Anne -- who happens to be the little girl in this picture.
